Barnsley to Silkstone common 8.5 miles. 

 

Depart New St 09.03 service changing at Sheffield. 

 

This walk takes us out of Barnsley along the disused Barnsley canal. It's then paths around the outer edge of Barnsley and the Gawber estate. We will stop for lunch above the M1. Nice view for lunch, but only one bench so make sure you are at the front... The final 2.5 miles will be along the disused railway line up to Silkstone common (1in 40) a little stepper in parts. A lovely public house to finish with. On Friday's they do fish n chips, apparently these are excellent... from 16.00... but she will start earlier if any interest.... PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU FANCY FISH n CHIPS.. 

 

Trains off Silkstone at xx . 49 towards Sheffield.

Thursday 3rd - Monday 7th September

Cork Ireland

​

Three walks, Mallow, Ballycotton Cliff's and Cobh.

 

Mallow walk 3/9 miles 

Train from Cork to Mallow 25 mins

FIP fare € 2.50

This figure of eight walk takes us along the river path through the town and castle gardens before returning to the town (3miles). The remaining six miles are on lanes and a section on The Blackwater way (long distance path) through a forest. We pass a Aldi around 4 miles so can grab lunch from here if required.

260m climbing but nothing steep. 90% on tarmac.

 

Ballycotton cliffs 

6 miles 

FIP €1.95 bus was €8.60 return.

Train to Midleton 25mins then bus or minibus to Ballycotton. Only one bus returning at 16.55.

An easy cliff walk. Will reverse it on the day so we do the tarmac section first then return along the cliffs. 

180 m of climbing, nothing steep. 50% on tarmac.

Half hourly service Midleton to Cork.

 

Fota to Cobh.

6 miles 

Train Cork to Fota.

FIP €1.95.

Walk begins around the grounds of Fota house & gardens. Red squirrels and a Tiger spotted. We cross Beverley bridge on to the Island. Small section along a busy road. Unfortunately this walk is all lanes & roads, two steepish hills as we cross over the Island before our decent into Cobh. 160m climbing.

Half hourly service back to Cork. 

 

I have just stayed at the Premier Inn at Cork. 20 mins from the Railway station. 

Anywhere around the town would be suitable.

Airport was €20 in a taxi, a bus is available.

I've had a quick glance at flights not that much at present. One going out from Birmingham in the morning but returns early back from Cork, Ryanair. There's two back to Bristol with Air Lingus.

Thursday 17th September

Creswell to Shirebrook 7.6 miles 

 

08.49 off New St change at Nottingham for the Worksop service to Creswell.

A nice easy walk as long as it stays dry as there is a lot of field walking. It begins with a loop of Creswell grags then on to Langwith where refreshments and toilet facilities will be available. This will be our lunch stop.

The final few miles are along paths and yes you guessed it some disused railway line which takes us into Shirebrook.

IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND THIS WALK COULD YOU PLEASE LET ME KNOW. If there is enough of us, I will try and see if the Micro brewery will open a little earlier for us.

I plan to return via Worksop as there is a lovely little pub on the platform (not recced) then Sheffield and home...

Thursday 24th September 

Bradford on Avon to Bath Spa 8 miles.

 

Depart New Street on the 0912 service to Bristol TM  changing for Bradford on Avon. Rather than head straight for the Kennet and Avon Canal, we will detour into the town to marvel at some of the Georgian architecture. Doubling back, we walk past a Medieval Tithe Barn onto the canal and walk appropriately 3.5 miles to another marvel of architecture, the Dundas aqueduct. We turn into Monkton Coomb, pause briefly to look at the grave of Harry Patch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Patch

From here, quite a steep climb for spectacular views of Bath and then we descend down into the Spa town.

(Parts of this walk have been walked by us before)

There are regular return  trains home.
